October 2009
As October slowly rolls to an end, so does a very important time in our country - National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. According to NBCAM.org, "an estimated 192,370 new cases of invasive breast cancer are expected to be diagnosed among women in the United States this year. An estimated 40,170 women are expected to die from the disease in 2009 alone." These numbers are staggering. National Breast Cancer Awareness month is celebrating its 25th year of spreading education about this terrible disease. Though many strides have been taken in the treatment and awareness of breast cancer, there still remains so much more to accomplish. If you would like any more information about how to help, or if you just want to know more, please visit the National Breast Cancer Awareness Month website, www.NBCAM.org. This is a year-round site designed to help anyone who may have questions about early detection, symptoms, treatments, or how to get involved. So please take a moment to visit this website. [More]

October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and this month marks the 25th anniversary of the organization's founding. Some say all of the over-exposure from organizations like National Breast Cancer Awareness Month and The Susan G. Komen Foundation are having a reverse effect and making women complacent when it comes to their breast health. While there have been significant advances in the detection and treatment of breast cancer, there is no cure. It is for this reason that women are urged to do regular breast self-exams, have their doctors perform breast exams and for women over 40 to have an annual mammogram. For more information about breast health and for tips on how to talk to your doctor, visit The National Breast Cancer Awareness Month Web site at www.nbcam.org. [More]

The first NBCAM event started in 1985 as a week-long program to provide information to the public about the disease. At the time there were still lots of misconceptions about the illness and many women were still not aware of the importance of early diagnosis and treatment. Now on its 25th anniversary, NBCAM has grown to a month-long event that has the help of national public service organizations, professional medical associations, government agencies and thousands of public figures who help to draw attention to the program. October was declared Breast Cancer Awareness Month 25 years ago to educate America about second most common form of cancer among women. The National Breast Cancer Awareness Month organization was created as a partnership with national public service organizations, professional medical associations, and government agencies to share information on the disease. Included in the celebration of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the third Friday in October has been declared National Mammography Day. According to NBCAM, mammograms are the best available method to detect breast cancer early. Although they make up less than one percent of all cases, men can also be affected by breast cancer. NBCAM states that the cancer can develop in men but is less common due to a smaller amount of breast tissue. Though rare, breast cancer in men can be very dangerous. NBCAM says that because of the small amount of breast tissue, cancers do not grow far before reaching the skin covering the breast or the muscles underneath, which allows the cancer to spread more than in women, according to NBCAM. You're not imagining it if you feel surrounded by pink. The annual observance was started in part by the American Academy of Family Physicians, pharmaceutical company AstraZeneca's HealthCare Foundation and nonprofit CancerCare Inc. Nonprofit Susan G. Komen for the Cure linked breast cancer awareness to the color pink in 1982, when the first Komen Race for the Cure logo design was an abstract female runner outlined with a pink ribbon. The idea really took off in 1992 when, while working on Self magazine's second Breast Cancer Awareness Month issue, editor in chief Alexandra Penney created a ribbon and worked with cosmetics companies such as Estée Lauder to distribute them in New York City stores.
