American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) Representing more than 51,000 members, the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) strives to maintain the highest standards of health care for women. In pursuit of this goal, ACOG carries out extensive educational programs for its physician members and promotes patient education and involvement in medical care. Founded in 1951, ACOG created the first nationwide professional organization in obstetrics and gynecology. Today, more than 90% of American board-certified ob-gyns are affiliated with ACOG. ACOG is headquartered in Washington, DC.
Resources for NBCAM Program Planners
Resources for Patients: ACOG publishes several patient education pamphlets on breast health. Pamphlets include Detecting and Treating Breast Problems, Reducing Your Cancer Risk, Fibrocystic Breast Disease, and Mammography (available in English and Spanish).
The ACOG website provides information on highlighted Committee Opinions, press releases, and patient education materials. During the months of September and October, www.acog.org features special articles on breast health and provides links to the NBCAM website.
Resources for Health Professionals: ACOG provides an extensive continuing medical education program to keep ob-gyns up to date on the latest developments in the field, including standards of clinical care in gynecologic oncology. ACOG issues professional education documents that provide the latest recommendations on clinical practice. Topics covered include Breast Cancer Screening, Role of the Obstetrician-Gynecologist in the Diagnosis and Treatment of Breast Disease, and Follow-Up of Abnormal Screening Mammography.
Ordering information: Health professionals and members of the public can request a copy of the 2006 publications catalog, which lists ACOG educational materials, by contacting the ACOG Resource Center (resources@acog.org). Educational materials, including books, videotapes, and CD-ROMs, can be ordered directly through the ACOG Bookstore. ACOG members can access publications on the membership side of the ACOG website.
