Oncology Nursing Society (ONS) The mission of the Oncology Nursing Society (ONS) is to promote excellence in oncology nursing and quality cancer care. The Oncology Nursing Society (ONS) is a national organization of more than 32,000 registered nurses and other health care professionals dedicated to excellence in patient care, teaching, research, administration, and education in the field of oncology. It is the largest professional membership oncology association in the world. It was established in 1975 and has 221 chapters. Over the past decade, ONS and its affiliate, the ONS Foundation, have funded thousands of dollars for research, community education, and support related to breast cancer prevention and treatment. The ONS is headquartered in Pittsburgh, PA.
Resources for NBCAM Program Planners
ONS offers access to oncology nurses across the United States in local chapters. Upon request, assistance with locating speakers for community events can be provided. ONS also offers educational programming for health professionals relative to the development of community programs on cancer prevention and early detection. The ONS Foundation has grants available for public education programs.
ONS has published positions on Mammography Screening for Breast Cancer in the United States; Ambulatory Surgery for Patients with Cancer; and Quality Cancer Care. Copies of positions are available free of charge-and can be downloaded from the website. ONS also has published Multicultural Outcomes Guidelines for Cultural Competence, which can be downloaded free of charge from the website. The ONS Publishing Division publishes a variety of educational publications for professionals and also has publications for consumers that can assist in coping with cancer including Silver Linings and Journaling through the Storm. Once Upon a Hopeful Night and two workbooks to help children deal with the diagnosis and treatment of a mother or father with cancer are available as well. These publications are available for sale through ONS customer service. The ONS website at http://www.ons.org, offers many downloadable resources free of charge. There is a special area of the site called Patient Education which has patient and consumer educational materials available as well as links to other sources of consumer educational materials.
