National Cancer Institute (NCI) Based in Bethesda, MD, the National Cancer Institute (NCI) is part of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) and is the Federal government’s lead agency for cancer research and education. NCI’s Making Health Communication Programs Work – This guide to program planning was recently revised from the original first printed in 1989 and describes a practical approach for planning and implementing health communication efforts: http://www.cancer.gov/pinkbook.
NCI’s Center to Reduce Cancer Health Disparities (CRCHD) – CRCHD’s activities focus on the populations in the United States that suffer disproportionately from cancer and on the social, economic, cultural, and environmental factors underlying these disparities. Center programs are designed to bridge the disconnect between research discoveries and the delivery of their benefits to all. NCI’s Cancer Patient Education Network (CPEN) – With over 70 members, CPEN is made up of cancer patient education program leaders from NCI-designated cancer centers nationwide and enables the exchange of information among cancer patient educators to improve the management and delivery of patient education services. Breast Cancer Progress Review Group (PRG) – The Breast Cancer PRG, a panel of prominent scientists and advocates, assessed the state of the science and identified future research-related priorities.
